Body of missing woman found; no foul play suspected

Melissa Ann Birtzer

HURLBURT FIELD — A major assigned to the 1st Special Operations Wing was found dead on Eglin’s reservation at 11 a.m. Tuesday.

Melissa Ann Birtzer, who was 42, was last seen at her home on Northampton Circle on Saturday, according to the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office. She was reported missing Sunday.

Family members told the Sheriff’s Office they had not had contact with her since Saturday. She did not take her wallet, credit cards or cash with her, although her 2003 dark blue Toyota 4-Runner was missing.

“There’s no indication at this time of foul play,” said Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Michele Nicholson, who added that it appears Birtzer took her own life. “There will be an autopsy.”

Birtzer was a health care integrator, according to a news release from Hurlburt Field.
