CRESTVIEW — There was no drama in Thursday’s District 2-6A girls basketball game between Choctawhatchee and Crestview.
The Indians took control of things early opening the game with a 13-0 run on their way to a 48-19 win.
Choctaw (10-0, 2-0) led 17-2 at the end of the first quarter and was up 37-10 at the half.
“We just wanted to be aggressive and play good clean basketball,” Indian coach Don Brown said. “But it got a little nasty at the end of the ball game, but we just want to play basketball as hard as we can play.
“We’ve got a long season ahead of us. We just have to try do get better every day and do what we need to do to win.”
LaKeisa Clay and Brittany Washington were a fast and furious one-two combination in Choctaw’s big first quarter as they teamed up for 13 of the 17 Indian points.
Washington, who finished the night with nine points, scored seven in the first period. Clay was good for six of her game-high 17 points in the opening period.
Crestview’s first score of the night came with 3:28 left in the first quarter when Jasmine Middleton got a basket off an offensive rebound.
Although Choctaw’s Florida State signee Brittany Brown didn’t score but one basket in the first period she showed her versatility dishing the ball off to teammates to give them easy baskets.
Brown was able to score five more points in the second quarter and finished the game with nine points.
The Bulldogs (2-4, 0-3) generated a little more offense in the second quarter with Kerrie York scoring four of Crestview’s eight points.
The Indians continued to pour it on in the third quarter and a Clay bucket with 5:02 left in the period put Choctaw up 47-12. With the Indians leading by 35 points the remainder of the game was played with a running clock.
Things got a little physical in the fourth quarter as the Bulldogs committed a couple of hard fouls drawing the wrath of the Indian bench, but that was about all the drama that was left in a game that had long been over.
“Choctaw is the best team I’ve seen,” Bulldog coach Kathy Combest said. “Coach Brown does a great job and his daugter (Brittany) is tremendous.
“The defense did what we wanted, but we weren’t looking for No. 5 (Clay). Maybe by the time we meet them again our offense will be more in sync.”
When the final horn sounded Clay led all scorers with 17 points. Brown and Washington each had nine points for the Indians and Lauren Day added seven points.
Middleton led the Bulldogs with seven points. York added five points and Jensis Coleman three points.
