FORT WALTON BEACH — The Center for Lifelong Learning’s prospective students may register Jan. 11 at the University of West Florida auditorium, 1170 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.
Returning members who have attended at least one of the previous two semesters may register at 9 a.m. New students register at 1 p.m.
Registration will continue the following week, 9 a.m. to noon, Monday through Wednesday in the UWF administration building.
Tuition is $40 and allows students to take as many as four classes.
Most classes are Fridays at the UWF campus on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and on Thursdays at Troy University’s Fort Walton Beach campus.
Other classes meet at different sites during other days of the week.
Most classes meet eight weeks, although some double-session classes meet four weeks. Classes are open to adults, for personal enjoyment with no tests or grades.
The center will offer 71 course selections. Courses cover areas as follows.
•Arts and crafts: wax painting, pen and ink, watercolors, rug hooking, beading, knitting, crochet and card making
•Fitness: tap dancing I & II; Scottish country dancing, Zumba Gold & Zumba Gold Toning and exercise for flexibility
•Photography: photo restoration, advanced DSLR, digital photography and video processing
•Computers: basic laptop, Windows 7, Microsoft Office 2010 and computer basics II
•Music: how to play the dulcimer or the Native American flute, or organize music files electronically
•Games and sports: Wizard Cards, skeet shooting, sports talk and baseball/football basics explained to improve viewing pleasure.
•Wellness: integrative medicine, self-awareness and change, conflict resolution, personality preferences, survival and emergencies, light energy therapy, memory and forgetting
•Financial planning: fundamentals of investing, stocks and bonds, estate planning and financial wellness
•Religion: Messianic prophecies, the Bible as literature, Biblical archaeology and comparative religion
•History: American presidents, U.S. Constitution, the Civil War’s human aspect, Florida history, European history, American West and Native American Indians
•Global issues: the death penalty, the Middle East, an eclectic view of the world and bank fraud
The center’s offerings also include: cooking, bird watching, color and fashion, astronomy meets psychology, antiques and collectibles, beginning German, basic home repairs, basic and advanced genealogy and public speaking.
In addition, the center invites interesting people to speak on timely topics during the lunch hour Thursdays at Troy and Fridays at UWF. These events are open to the public at no charge.
The center, a non-profit, all-volunteer organization associated with Road Scholar, has offered classes in the Fort Walton Beach area for 20 years.
