LAUREL HILL — The City Council on May 2 will discuss whether a $1,000 scholarship it unanimously approved Thursday would benefit one or more recipients.
City leaders will form a committee — with assistance from residents Harold Jones and Laurel Hill School guidance counselor Carla Strickland — for the selection process. Councilman Robby Adams and City Clerk Anita Miller also have volunteered.
All Laurel Hill School seniors who have financial need are eligible for the scholarship, which is merit-based.
Seniors with academic accomplishments including valedictorian or salutatorian will be considered. Being the senior class president, student council president or yearbook editor is a credit.
Students actively involved in after-school activities including sports, Future Farmers of America or church involvement also will be considered.
"The way we did it last year was that $500 was given to the student for the first semester and the remaining $500 was given to them the following semester," Miller said.
The city may withdraw the scholarship if the recipient drops out of school. The scholarship must be used within one year after being received, according to the policy.
The council’s next meeting is at 6 p.m. May 2 at City Hall.

Scholarship applications are available at Laurel Hill City Hall, on State Road 85, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Deadline to apply is April 22.
