Foxwood LGA supports school golf programs

Baker School golf coach James Kerrell, with his team, accepts a check from Foxwood Ladies Golf Association President Bonnie Rincon on Monday at Foxwood Country Club.

CRESTVIEW — Four north Okaloosa County school golf programs have additional funding following the Foxwood Country Club Ladies Golf Association’s most recent contributions.

The LGA gave Crestview High School, Baker School and Davidson Middle School’s golf programs each a $300 check on Monday afternoon at the green’s headquarters.

The LGA also wrote a $300 check for the Shoal River Middle School golf team, which couldn’t attend the presentation due to a prior commitment.

The LGA raised $1,300 from hole sponsorships during a December tournament, said Bonnie Rincon, the association’s president.

Baker, Crestview High and Davidson’s coaches said the donations would go toward the teams’ regular expenses including golf equipment and team shirts.

"We're probably going to use it towards shirts or (golf) balls," James Kerrell, Baker’s middle school coach, said.

Davidson Middle School coach David Carnley said he hopes the money will help the team build on its momentum.

"Some of our best players are in the sixth grade, so we have some good stuff to build on," he said.

Some of the schools use the country club for practice and occasional local matches, LGA members said.

"Foxwood is very much part of this community and they support everything in this community," Rincon said.

One student present for the donations said golf has been a lifelong passion for her.

Morgan Stutler, 15, who plays for the Crestview High School girls golf team, said her father was instrumental in nurturing her talent and supporting her efforts.

"He said I had a natural talent for it, with my swing," she said.

Stutler plans to earn a women's golf scholarship to a Florida college.
