CRESTVIEW — While his brother, James, fretted over his date's late arrival, Crestview High School senior Daniel Reid happily posed with his date, Kilee Schoenherr, at the pier on Twin Hills Park's east pond.
The students and their families were part of a throng that traditionally heads for two of the park's most popular picture spots: the pier and its gazebo, and the stately columns of Northwest Florida State College's Crestview campus across the pond.
Brightly colored gowns with glinting sequins, rented tuxedos and vests, boutonnières and wrist corsages, and many smiles graced both locations. Cameras and cell phone cameras flashed, moms and dads beamed, and younger siblings ribbed their dapper brothers and sisters.
Daniel and Kilee's parents, Latina Reid and Deanna Schoenherr, respectively, fussed over their children, straightening a gig line, tugging a hem, as James Reid Sr. slipped his son some money for the evening's expenses.
Many prom-goers dined at local restaurants before joining classmates at the Eglin Air Force Base Officers' Club for the evening's festivities.
Some of the kids, including Daniel and James Jr., worked extra hours at their part-time jobs or tackled yard work and other chores for neighbors to earn money for the $60 prom tickets, tux rentals, gowns and alterations, and dinner before the dance.
James Jr.'s date did arrive — just fashionably late.
