Crestview High School's Kerrie York goes up and over the high jump bar at Friday's District 1-3A track and field meet at Pensacola's Booker T. Washington High School. York, who finished third, earned a trip to Thursday's regional meet in Tallahassee.

PENSACOLA— Rainy and windy weather greeted competitors at Friday's District 1-3A track and field meet at Booker T. Washington High School.

Conditions were tough for the most experienced track athletes, but for a young Crestview High School squad amid a rebuilding year, things were especially tough.

The Bulldogs finished 10th out of 14 teams in the girls meet with 21 points. Crestview boys finished in 13th place with 17 points. Pine Forest won the girls and boys meets.

Two Crestview senior girls qualified for Thursday's region 1-3A meet at Tallahassee Chiles. Kerrie York took third in the high jump, going 4-feet-10 inches. Jasmine Horne was fourth in the long jump with a leap of 16-3.

Jaylynne Robinson narrowly missed qualifying in the boys 100-meter as he finished in fifth place.

Results didn’t surprise Bulldog track and field coach Ernie Martin.

"We are not very senior-laden this year," he said. We had six senior track athletes this year, and that's boys and girls. I was really lower-grade heavy this year.

"I had a lot of ninth- and 10th-graders out. Hopefully, we will be able to keep them out so we can keep building our program. We kind of had a down cycle on the older kids."

Martin — who was pleased that York and Horne qualified for the regional meet — said he was expecting big things from them.

"Last year we only carried one to regional, and this year we are taking two," he said. "That's a small gain and I understand that, but we are improving."

Earlier this month, the Bulldog junior varsity track teams made a strong showing at the Okaloosa County meet with Crestview winning the girls and taking second in the boys.

"That kind of gives you an idea of where our strength lies in our numbers for the future," Martin said. "We should be highly competitive in the varsity ranks for years to come.

"It was kind of down this year, but hopefully this time next year we will be loading up a charter bus and taking quite a few to the regional meet. We are looking for great things to come out of this in the future. The future looks bright for track at Crestview High."
