BAKER — When the Baker School football team returns to the field Monday for the second half of summer workouts, it will only be four weeks until the official start of fall practice.
The Gators have been in the weight room and on the practice field Monday, Tuesday and Thursday mornings as they turn their focus to the 2013 season.
The players and coaches are off this week enjoying the Fourth of July holiday. Head coach Matt Brunson said it’s a well deserved break.
“These guys are great workers, and the attendance has been great,” he said. “We’ve had everybody attend. The main thing we are focusing on now is getting back in the weight room and trying to gain strength.
“At the same time we are trying to build our conditioning to get ready for the fall camp.”
Along with the weight training, the Gators have been working on their offense and defense in anticipation of the quickly approaching campaign.
“We’ve been working on the play action pass, throwing and catching it, and past that, our conditioning,” Brunson said. “We have some guys that go both ways and we don’t do a lot of conditioning in May during spring training because we focus on the physical part of the game. But now we are trying to focus on the conditioning and the cardio part of the game.”
Brunson plans for the team to participate in some seven-on-seven passing games this month as the Gators continue to push toward the 2013 season.
“We will hit it hard when we get back,” he said. “We will go Monday, Tuesday and Thursday still. We will try to get some throwing sessions in on Thursday.
“We’ve got FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) camp coming so we are excited about that at the end of July.”
