CRESTVIEW — Crestview High School students have another option for community involvement this year with the school's Interact Club.
The after-school club, affiliated with the Crestview Rotary Club, will give students community outreach opportunities, school sponsor Carla Karas said.
"Students will have (occasions) to earn community service hours and to give back to their local and international communities," she said.
Karas, a Rotarian, said the club would regularly work with the rotary club for future events. Several students have already volunteered at the Baker Corn Maze, an event sponsored by the rotary club.
"They have asked us to volunteer and participate with them," club president Jenna Phillips, 17, said. "(For the haunted trail) we have been dressing up and scaring people … for the corn maze we will escort people and help those who get lost (in the maze)."
Phillips, a senior, is in charge of conducting the monthly meetings and assigning committees for school fundraisers and community events.
Students are encouraged to propose their own ideas to raise funds for the school or provide a public service.
Freshmen student Brandon White, 14, said the club is considering his community project idea.
"I came up with the idea of going to the library and collecting old books and taking them to the elementary school," he said.
One goal, Karas said, is to make an everlasting impact on students.
"The world is getting smaller every day, and it is important that they start expanding their horizons early," she said.
