CRESTVIEW — Three Shoal River Middle School students’ efforts have helped fill the Panhandle Animal Welfare Society’s supplies closet.
Seventh-graders Sheindel Smith, Amber Washington and Yazmeen Deehr recently collected monetary donations and pet items outside the Crestview Publix.
The girls, for their Mustang Learning Community project, recently distributed fliers with a list of needed items to the grocery store’s customers. Dry and canned pet food and toys, travel crates and cleaning supplies were among the items listed.
The girls also collected $500, which they used to purchase pet products for the Fort Walton Beach animal shelter and clinic, MLC coordinator Laurie Allen said.
MLC students must do several community projects throughout the school year, Allen said. With each project, students must give at least 20 percent of their time back to the community.
The girls said they would be interested in assisting PAWS again.
"I was happy to do it, because I like animals," Sheindel said.
"I wanted to work with animals in our project, because animals need as much help as humans do," Amber said.
