CRESTVIEW — Northwest Florida’s First Lego League teams have gained insight on robotics programming techniques and strategies following open practice Oct. 26 at Bob Sikes Elementary School.
Adam Kelly, a volunteer from St. John Catholic School in Panama City, assisted his son and other students for the school's first season in the league.
"The reason for coming out here … (was) to give our team the ability to see what (it) is like to be in a competition come December," he said. "It (gave) them the opportunity to see what other teams are doing and the approaches that they are taking."
Students will use robots and problem-solving skills to tackle this year's challenge, "Nature's Fury," which requires teams to prepare for a natural disaster.
Teamwork is essential throughout the league, members said.
"What is great about Lego (league) … is that you are not trying to destroy the other team; they are your friends," Shoal River Middle School student Alby Clendennin said. "It's Coopertition."
"Coopertition" is a term the league uses to stress cooperation while competing.
