BAKER — With less than a month left before the District 3-1A tournament the Baker School baseball team continues to play an inconsistent brand of ball that leaves Coach Adam Henry scratching his head.
Another inconsistent game against South Walton on Monday proved costly as the Seahawks took a 7-5 win.
"We were still on spring break the first part of the game," Henry said. "We gave up three unearned runs tonight and they came back and to bite us in the butt.
"We finally woke up about the sixth inning and that's promising. But if we start out hot it's a lot better ball game. We have to come out on fire because when we do we play well."
The Seahawks took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when Nick Glover drew a leadoff walk from Baker starting pitcher Alan Weidenhammer. Weidenhammer retired the next two batters and it looked as if the Gators would keep South Walton off the scoreboard. But a two-out double by Zach Vance scored Glover and Baker would play catch up the rest of the game.
The Gators (5-11-1) tied the game in the bottom of the third.
Mason Lowery and Cody Barnhill each drew a two-out walk from Seahawk pitcher Tuck Stafford. Kyle Davis made Stafford pay for the walks with a base hit up the middle to score Lowery.
Things fell apart for the Gators in the fourth inning as South Walton scored four runs on just two hits. Three Baker errors and two walks helped the Seahawks pad the lead.
Weidenhammer's night on the mound was finished after, with one out he gave up two walks and a run.
Colton Kilpatrick finished out the inning giving up a pair of hits as the Seahawks scored their final three runs of the frame.
Kilpatrick lasted on the mound until the sixth inning when the Seahawks added two more runs. Kilpatrick was relieved by Bubba Ellis. Ellis didn't make it out of the inning and Jake Rainey came in to hold down the fort.
Rainey got the Gators out of the inning, but Baker had a big hill to climb with just an inning-and-a-half left to play.
The Gators did battle as Kyle Davis singled with one out and Travis Adams kept Baker's hopes alive with a two-out walk.
Austin Davis was next and he delivered a hit to right field to score his brother, Kyle Davis, and Adams.
Baker added two more runs in the seventh inning on three hit batters and two walks.
Austin Davis and Kyle Davis led the Gators with two hits each. Lowery Walked three times and scored two runs.
