CRESTVIEW — Two Davidson Middle School Panthers stood tall during the recent Okaloosa County Middle School golf and track championships.
Panther seventh-grader Chandler Holloway won the boys county golf title and eighth-grader Hunter Goff won the 400-meter run at the county track meet.
Holloway shot an even par 36 at Foxwood Country Club on May 5 in claiming his title.
"It felt great," he said. "After all the time and practice I've put in the past couple of months, it really paid off.
"I knew the people I'd be playing and I felt I was in a good position (to win)."
Holloway said recent practices at Foxwood helped him know the course's condition, where to set up on the tee and the proper angles to take.
Holloway said he has seriously pursued golf the last four years, but he's been around golf most of his life.
And while golf has long been a pursuit of Holloway, it was only this year that Goff, an eighth-grader, took up running after moving to Crestview from Alaska.
"This was my first year doing track," he said. "I surprised myself.
"The best part was winning the trophy."
He wasn't ready for the heat and humidity, though.
"I almost had a heat stroke," Goff said.
Being on the track team allowed Goff to make new friends and now he's looking forward to testing himself at the high school level next year when he runs for Crestview.
