Baker Quarterback Club renews golf tournament

BAKER — The Baker School football team is renewing an old tradition.

The Baker Quarterback Club will host the Baker Quarterback Club Golf Tournament on June 28 at Foxwood Country Club in Crestview.

Scheduled to be on hand are Baker’s two state championship winning coaches. John Ensor, who led the Gators to championships in 1983, 1984 and 1985, will be there, as will Jeff Webb, who took Baker to the 1993 title.

Gator head football coach and athletic director Matt Brunson said in years past the golf tournament was a major fundraiser for the Baker football program, but the tournament has been dormant for several years.

Brunson, a Baker alumnus who returned to his alma mater in 2011, said the tournament was a fundraiser fixture.

“It’s the first time we’ve done it several years,” he said. “We are renewing an annual tradition as the Baker Quarterback Golf Tournament.

“We’ve got some great people with a storied playoff tradition.  With the long runs (into the playoffs) we made we always needed to make extra money and the golf tournament was one way we did that.”

Brunson said he was approached by some people in the Baker community about bringing the tournament back. Dale Henderson, who is running the tournament, was one of the main people instrumental in renewing the tournament.

“When I was here before as a player and an assistant coach, Dale Henderson and the Quarterback Club did a great job of putting the golf tournament together,” he said. “They always hosted it at Foxwood and fed the guys good. It was always a good payback (to the football program).

“B.J. Thomhave (Foxwood general manager) has been great to us through the years. That’s where we’ve always had it and where we are going to keep on having it.”

Brunson said Ensor and Webb quickly agreed to play.

“They were names in the community when they were coaches here,” he said. “There are a lot of people that should come back to see those guys.

“John, I know is an avid golfer, and Jeff plays as well so those guys will be ready.”

Brunson said the tournament is a four-man best ball format. Cost is $200 per team. If you don’t have a team and want to play the cost is $50 and you can show up at 7 a.m. on June 28 and they will place you with a team.

The Baker Quarterback Club also is seeking hole sponsors and donations for door prizes.
