School funding will follow a new path in Okaloosa County for the first time in almost two decades.
The Okaloosa County School Board voted 4-1 to move forward with Superintendent Mary Beth Jackson’s centralized budget plan. Dewey Destin voted against the change.
In previous years, principals at each school were tasked with creating and maintaining budgets at their individual schools. Jackson asked for the change after she saw inequities between schools around the district.
While all the changes the new budget system might create won’t be available until the new budget is approved later this year, Jackson has promised the eventual return of previously removed electives in the lower grades.
