Antioch summer daycare educates, teaches social skills

Antioch Daycare students Connor Harper, Baylin Bowman and Christopher Pitts work on a tablet.

CRESTVIEW — Don’t tell the kids, but summer daycare at Antioch Elementary School is as educational as it is fun, program coordinator Laura McMillin says.

On average, 50 to 55 Antioch students, ages 4 to 10, attend the weekday program, where structured and not-so-structured play and activities stimulate young minds and build social skills.

On a typical day, children work on tablets, build houses, castles and other structures out of Lego blocks, play homemaker in a toy kitchen, weave wrist bracelets on a small loom, play games and read books.

Visits from special guests, such as police officers, introduce the kids to professions and teach them about opportunities and services in their community.
