Crestview man charged with robbing couple after car ride

William John Beatty

The Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office has charged a Crestview man with armed robbery and violation of probation after he allegedly robbed a couple at knifepoint Tuesday night.

The victims told sheriff's deputies they were giving acquaintance William John Beatty, 46, a ride to a Shortwell Avenue home.

However, once they arrived, they say Beatty pulled a knife from his pocket, demanded money, and threatened to cut one of them. The man said he handed over $30 — all the cash he had.

The couple positively identified Beatty when he approached them while the deputy interviewed them on South Ferdon Boulevard, according to an arrest report.

Beatty, who had $20 in his pocket, said he’d been at a local bar drinking beer, deputies said.

He was arrested for armed robbery and also probation violation after a check revealed he was on felony probation for an original charge of possession of a controlled substance.
