Crestview firefighters respond following an early morning residential fire on Palmetto Drive. Residents were not home at the time of the incident, which is currently under investigation by the Florida State Fire Marshal’s office.

CRESTVIEW —  No injuries were reported following an early morning residential fire on Palmetto Drive.

No one was inside the two-story home on 112 Palmetto Drive at the time of the incident, Crestview Fire Department officials said.

Firefighters responded to the fire between 4 and 5 a.m. this morning.

“There was heavy fire on the second floor, blowing through the roof,” Crestview Fire Department Battalion Chief David Brown said. “It was a huge fire. We could see it from a half-mile away.”

Assistant fire Chief Ralph Everage Jr. said the cause of the fire, which resulted in extensive damage to the rear of the structure, is under investigation by the Florida state Fire Marshal’s office.

Firefighters were able to quickly put out the fire, though there was damage to the outside of a neighboring house.

Heat from the blaze melted the vinyl siding at 114 Palmetto Drive, Brown said.

Fairlily Hilliard, who lives next door to the heavily damaged residence, said she learned about the fire from a neighbor across the street, who had already called the fire department.

Fairlily’s son, Tony, said their home only sustained minor damage.
