FAMU cleanup crew spruces up apartment complex

Quoc Nguyen, Monique Westley, Adnan Kazmik, Tiffani Reed, Akimo John-Baptiste, Victoria Rojas and Anne Weaver, FAMU College of Pharmacy students, squeezed in some community service hours between exams on Thursday. They pulled weeds and removed debris in the 1000 through 5000 blocks of Spring Creek Apartments.

CRESTVIEW — The Spring Creek Apartments complex looks a little neater thanks to volunteers' teamwork.

College of Pharmacy students from the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University's Crestview campus spruced up the area Thursday morning as a community service project.

Akimo John-Baptiste, Adnan Kazmik, Quoc Nguyen, Tiffani Reed, Anne Weaver, Victoria Rojas and Monique Westley were among the students who squeezed in the work between multiple exams this week.

FAMU's Crestview campus has just been open for two years, Westley said, but the Crestview students "are wanting to make their mark on the community."

She said class members want to embody the school's mission statement of applying knowledge, skills and creativity in service to society.

"The College of Pharmacy Class of 2018 has a whole lot of community service years" to work before their graduation, Rojas said jokingly.

Students look forward to providing more service to the community. If you have a project suitable for FAMU community service, contact Rojas, class vice president, at victoria1.rojas@famu.edu.

On Oct. 2, they will participate in the Healthy Woman and Main Street Crestview Association's Pink Street Party for breast cancer awareness.

The event, set for 5:30-7 p.m.  on Main Street ,will include a breast cancer survivor march along Main Street, and NOMC specialists will be on hand to educate attendees on breast cancer detection.
