Deputies find weed, firearm during traffic stop

CRESTVIEW — A 25-year-old man charged with using or displaying a firearm during a felony, possession of marijuana with intent to sell, manufacture or deliver, and possession or use of drug paraphernalia will appear in court Oct. 21.

Okaloosa County Sheriff’s deputies said they didn’t expect to find a gun and more than 60 grams of marijuana when they made a traffic stop in Crestview.

They pulled over Kyle Stephen Kurpil, of Crestview, Sept. 13 after he crossed the fog line six times in 2 miles, according to the arrest report. When the deputy asked for license, registration and insurance, he noted an odor of marijuana and smell of alcohol.

Kurpil agreed to perform standardized field sobriety tests, the report said. He admitted he’d been drinking at Split Oaks Saloon.

Kurpil completed tests successfully and the deputy asked about the smell of marijuana, according to the report. He denied knowing anything about the smell.

A search found 65 grams of marijuana, a scale, a box of plastic bags and a 9-mm semi-automatic handgun in the vehicle, the report said. The gun was loaded with 7 rounds of ammunition.

After being arrested, Kurpil said the items belonged to him and that most of the marijuana was for personal use, according to the report.
