After-hours visitors scared off Baker's haunted trail

CRESTVIEW — Okaloosa County Sheriff’s deputies acknowledge running off a group of trespassers last week on the haunted trail at Bill Barnhill’s land in Baker, but say claims of citations being issued to anyone are figments of somebody’s imagination.

“That’s totally untrue,” Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Larry Ward said.

Barnhill called deputies to his Baker Corn Maze and Haunted Trail about 8:30 p.m. Sept. 27 to report a boisterous group of trespassers on the property, which closed at 6 p.m. due to inclement weather, Ward said.

Officers arriving on scene discovered someone had opened a closed gate, Ward said. They rounded up the interlopers and sent them on their way with an invitation to come back when the trail reopened.

Verbal trespass warnings were given, according to Ward and a Sheriff’s Office call sheet.
