Man arrested for attempted burglary of deputy's truck

James Chestnut

CRESTVIEW — James Chestnut, 37, of Crestview, has been charged with attempted burglary, possession of burglary tools, and attempted grand theft after trying to remove a cooler from a truck belonging to a Walton County deputy.

According to an Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office press release, Deputy Jonathan Smith of Crestview said while preparing for work around 5 a.m. Friday, he saw a man near the back of his truck, using a pair of metal shears to cut the cables that secured the Yeti cooler to the truck bed.

Smith, who was in uniform, ordered Chestnut to the ground, where he handcuffed and detained him until Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office  deputies arrived.

Chestnut told Smith he just “wanted a beer.”
