1 dead, 2 injured in early traffic accident

CRESTVIEW — An early morning traffic accident involving a Crestview man left a Punta Gorda man in serious condition and his passenger dead.

Robert Ellis Charlton, 61, of Crestview, was traveling eastbound on Interstate 10, near mile marker 212, and Duane Alan Palmer, 42, along with Kimberly Kay Palmer, 47, were driving westbound around 1:05 a.m., according to a Florida Highway Patrol news release.

Charlton's vehicle, a 2007 International Eagle tractor trailer, veered left on the roadway and crossed the median into the westbound lanes on I-10, according to the FHP. Charlton's vehicle collided with the Palmers' 2014 Dodge Ram 1500 and continued traveling north on the shoulder of I-10.

Kimberly Palmer died; Duane Palmer received serious injuries; and Charlton received a minor injury, according to the FHP.

It's unknown whether alcohol was involved; the case is being investigated.

The Tallahassee Fire Department and Leon County EMS responded to the incident. 

All involved were taken to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital.
