LAUREL HILL — The distance from Laurel Hill to Brewton, Ala., home of Jefferson Davis Community College, is about 50 miles.
Laurel Hill School volleyball player Bridget Zessin will soon become familiar with Brewton and Jeff Davis Community as she signed a volleyball scholarship to play for the Warhawks on Thursday.
The similarities of Brewton and the college to Laurel Hill were a major selling point for Zessin.
“I like how small it is,” she said. “It’s a family school a lot like Laurel Hill.
“When I went to Jefferson Davis I kind of fell in love with it.”
Zessin expects to play outside hitter or setter, but her dad, Kent Zessin, who also is the Hobo volleyball coach said she can play almost anywhere on the floor.
“She’s able to play multiple positions on the court,” he said. “Not only can she be an outside hitter, she can be a defensive specialist or a setter.
She has good serves and she’s a very coachable type player. And she has great knowledge of the game itself.”
Bridget said the worst part of the recruiting process was waiting for an offer after trying out for the team.
Bridget admits the biggest challenge of leaving home will be in the actual leaving home.
“I’m going in (to Jeff Davis) and not knowing anyone,” she said. “I was born and raised in Laurel Hill with my dad as my coach and I know all my teammates here.”
Bridget has started preparing herself for her college career as she is starting to practice volleyball again and is back lifting weights.
As she looks to the future Bridget plans on following Kent into coaching.
But before getting her start in coaching she has one more volleyball goal.
“It has always been a dream of mine to play at a four-year college” she said.
