Okaloosa school district's open enrollment for same-sex couples ending soon

CRESTVIEW — Blue Cross/Blue Shield, the Okaloosa County School District’s employee insurance provider, will end open enrollment to accommodate same-sex couples, at least one spouse of which is a school district employee, on Feb. 27.

Open enrollment is for same-sex couples lawfully married in another state before Florida’s law changed Jan. 5 to permit same-sex marriages in the state, school district representative Henry Kelley said.

For same-sex couples who marry under Florida’s new law, “it’s a change-of-life status and you have a 30-day window” to change insurance coverage to include a spouse, Kelley said.

The open enrollment was a Blue Cross/Blue Shield decision and was not a school district initiative, Kelley said.

School district employees may direct any questions to the insurance provider.
