CRESTVIEW — Some 40 rising third- through eighth-graders now know more about volleyball's basics.
They attended the Crestview Bulldog Youth Volleyball Camp, which ran May 23, 24, 28 and 29.
For Bulldog volleyball Coach Kathy Combest, the camp, now in its fourth year, offers more than just getting to know the young women who might one day grace her roster. The focus is to teach players how to play the game right so they can enjoy the sport.
If, along the way, players can help their middle school or, one day, high school team, that’s just an extra benefit.
“It’s been great,” Combest said. “We are getting girls back, and they understand how to pass now and they kind of understand the game.
“But we want to get the middle schoolers ready for tryouts because they will start having tryouts the middle of July. And we try to get an interest from the elementary kids so when they go to middle school they know a little bit about volleyball.”
The camp — which focused on the basics of hitting, setting, passing, serving and defense — also allowed girls a chance to work on their spikes.
“We’ll drop the net or take them over there to the spiker (a volleyball equivalent of a batting tee),” Combest said. “I think they get a better understanding of the game. The more you play something, the better you will get.
“It also will give you a passion and love for it. It’s going to do nothing but help you.”
