News Bulletin welcomes Troy student as summer intern

Arneisha Robinson, a rising senior at Troy University in Alabama, says she hopes writing news, taking photographs and assisting the Crestview News Bulletin's advertising staff will prepare her for a career in advertising, magazines or public relations.

CRESTVIEW — You could say Arneisha Robinson is getting some on-the-job training.

The Crestview News Bulletin's intern, a rising senior at Troy University in Alabama, is learning all about the news media — namely advertising, graphic design, photography, news writing and editing — as she dreams about the future.

PASSION FOR WRITING

"I think it would go back to advertising," the 21-year-old said, when asked about her dream career. "Maybe being a CEO of my own advertising-slash-PR firm."

She already has ruled out one career path.

"I didn't want to do broadcast (television)," she said. "If anything, I would write my own column or a blog. Especially since it's no longer just print; it's more than that (like digital). I was interested in the 'more,' not just the print part of it."

But she appreciates print's options, too.

"Another thing I think I'd be interested in is setting up the paper and that design aspect of things," Robinson said. "It doesn't have to be just with newspapers. I've thought of magazines as well."

The 2012 Crestview High School graduate — who majors in multimedia journalism with a minor in advertising — has taken Reporting, Interviewing and Information, and Editing courses. Next school year, she will study Mass Media Law, Typography, Advanced Reporting and Advanced Editing.

Those courses have prepared her for the 10-week CNB internship, which will provide more valuable skills in a real-world environment.

"I think it will help in the sense that when I'm writing an ad, I'll know the grammar and I'll know the way things are supposed to be punctuated," she said. "So it'll be pleasing to the designer's eye but also grammatically correct."

PLANNING HER NEXT MOVE

Before www.crestviewbulletin.com featured her photographs from Crestview's Memorial Day celebration and a volunteer's efforts to watch military service members' pets while they're deployed,  she last reached online readers in the fall of 2014.

"I was just kind of blogging (on Tumblr) about my personality and how being in the military doesn't give you a  certain accent," she said. "You're kind of different than the rest of the people around you."

Robinson knows a bit about being a military brat. She has lived in Crestview for 14 years, but before that, she lived in various places including Incirlik Air Force Base in Turkey; Shreveport, La.; Barksdale, La.; and her birthplace in England.

As for her future dreams, she's already considering another move.

"My plan after Troy is to see if I like advertising as much as I think I do and move to Nashville or Arkansas and work with an advertising agency there," she said.
