CRESTVIEW — Today, at approximately 2 a.m., Crestview police officers responded to the 200 block of School Avenue, regarding a burglary in progress.
While at the scene, officers learned that the caller's ex-husband was breaking into the residence, according to a Crestview Police Department news release. The woman, her two small children and another adult male were at the home.
The mother and the other adult male escaped the home through a window, according to police.
The CPD's Special Weapons & Tactics team, along with Hostage Negotiations Team, was activated.
After many attempts to make contact with the ex-husband — identified as Joshua Arellano — the SWAT team entered the home to confirm the children's well-being and take Arellano into custody.
Arellano was taken into custody without incident and the two small children were returned to the mother unharmed.
Arellano was later booked into the Okaloosa County Jail on aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill and child abuse, both felonies.
