CRESTVIEW — One day, Crestview High School's 45 or so aspiring freshman football players might be thankful for Tuesday’s hot workout.
One day, those baby Bulldogs will appreciate the conditioning needed to compete at Florida's big-school level.
The summer is important for freshmen, Crestview Coach Tim Hatten said.
“We’ve got right at 44 to 45 ninth-graders that are in summer camp with us getting some work in — getting some reps in,” he said. “They are going to learn the system. They are going to learn the coaches.
“A big part of June for us is getting to know our ninth-grade class and keeping those cats together. I think it’s important that they know the system. We would like to get everything in during the summer time.”
Hatten said he hopes to teach freshmen the Bulldog offense and get it installed.
“When we start practice, we don’t have to do a lot of installations,” he said. “We are doing more of kind of honing up on what we already know.”
The varsity looked good the first couple of days of practice, which followed a two-week layoff after the May 29 game, Hatten said.
“We are only two weeks removed from spring,” he said. “The biggest thing for us is to continue doing what we’ve been doing and to do some agility stuff. We will continue to work a little on the offensive stuff and some seven-on-seven in the mornings.
“When you look at how late we played our spring game the 28th (of May), here it is the second week of June — and we are still going and we haven’t missed a beat.”
