Appeals court rules on former Crestview police major's racketeering conviction

State Attorney Bill Eddins announced Aug. 20 that the first District Court of Appeal affirmed the racketeering conviction of Joseph Floyd, former Crestview Police Department major.

Floyd has 15 days from the date of the opinion to ask for rehearing.

An Okaloosa County jury found Joseph Floyd guilty of racketeering after a two-week trial in 2013..

Assistant State Attorney Russ Edgar, who prosecuted Floyd, presented evidence that Floyd committed or directed other officers to commit a pattern of offenses that included falsifying official documents and police reports, excessive use of force, bribery, extortion, and tampering with evidence.

Floyd is currently serving a 10-year state prison sentence.
