Domestic Violence Awareness Month: 7 things to put in a bug-out bag

CRESTVIEW — Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office domestic violence and sexual assault investigator Kaye Towner recommends victims prepare a “bug-out,” or escape kit.

They should conceal it at a friend or neighbor’s house for when they’re ready to escape their assailant.

Include:

•Copies of identification such as a driver’s license, Social Security card, birth certificate and children’s Social Security cards

•List of phone numbers in case abuser takes victim’s cell phone

•Spare keys to the car and house

•A no-contract phone, minutes card and charger

•A stash of money or check card

•Several days' change of clothes

•Needed medication
