BAKER — Baker School needs adults and children's help to meet a goal of cleaning its campus and its community.
As it observes its first 100 years, the school’s Centennial Celebration Committee wants 100,000 service hours — that’s 1,000 hours per year it’s served the community — to go toward repair, painting, cleaning, and other projects around the school and the surrounding town.
Spearheading the campaign is Baker School’s Volunteer Committee, which includes second-grade teacher Julie Bass, Junior ROTC instructor Chief Warrant Office 2 Joe Nunley, and ROTC instructor Mike Ramirez.
“We are trying to get as many service hours in from the community as we can,” Nunley said.
An open letter states service hours can be earned doing just about any sort of project benefiting the school, Baker residents, or both.
“These projects could be as simple as picking up trash around school, to something more involved, such as helping a member of our town fix a home in need of repair,” the letter stated.
As individuals or teams complete projects, they should log service hours with a Volunteer Committee member.
The project is off to an enthusiastic start — “We currently have 6,853.5 hours of service,” Nunley said — but organizers need much more help to reach the centennial-themed goal.
Individuals and groups may contribute service hours to Baker School and the surrounding town.
