CRESTVIEW — Jon J. Jacobs, 52, of Hilary St., Crestview, is charged with one count each of driving under the influence and battery on a law enforcement officer after a Jan. 5 accident.
An Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office media release states deputies were called to Hilary Street about 6:30 p.m. Monday, where Jacobs allegedly struck a light pole, power box and tree, then struggled with the officers and hit one in the face during their attempts to handcuff him.
According to the release, Jacobs was slumped behind the wheel with the key's in the ignition in the "on" position, but the car was not running.
Deputies stated Jacobs, who appeared to be intoxicated, refused to obey commands to stay in the car, shoving two deputies away before falling into a ditch. He fought against being handcuffed and struck a deputy in the face while pulling his hand away.
The release also states, "While in the backseat of a patrol car awaiting the arrival of the Florida Highway Patrol to investigate the car crash, Jacobs began kicking the door.
"His blood alcohol level tested at .260, more than three times the legal limit."
Jacobs also faces additional charges from the FHP.
"He has taught for Okaloosa County Schools since 2006 and at Crestview High School for the past two years," the Northwest Florida Daily News states. "Prior to teaching at Crestview, he worked at some of the district’s alternative schools, School District Spokesman Henry Kelley said."
