Okaloosa Take Stock In Children mentor recognition ceremony scheduled

NICEVILLE — The Okaloosa Public Schools Foundation will honor roughly 60 mentors in its Take Stock In Children program.

The event is set for 11:30 a.m. Jan. 22 at the Niceville Complex Office, 202 B N. Highway 85, Niceville. Guest speakers will be state TSIC President Jillian Hasner and keynote speaker Okaloosa County Sheriff Larry Ashley.

Take Stock in Children Inc., a nonprofit organization that the Okaloosa Public Schools Foundation manages locally, provides opportunities of post-secondary education for low-income, academically qualified students.

"We offer college scholarships to students, provide caring volunteer mentors, and instill hope for a better life," a spokesperson with the organization stated in a media release. "Our comprehensive services begin in middle school, continue through high school, and include students' transition into college and career.

Each mentor meets once a week with their student, and provides a key resource to help students succeed.
