LAUREL HILL — Students applying for the city of Laurel Hill's annual scholarship can rest assured that the public will not know information about their grades or parents' income.

The town annually awards a $1,000 scholarship to a Laurel Hill School senior based on responses to questions on an application, which include data such as the applicants’ grade point averages and their parents’ incomes.

Councilman Travis Dewrell on Feb. 4 expressed concern about applicants and their families’ personal information becoming part of the city’s public records.

But city attorney Dan Campbell says the sensitive information can remain confidential.

“You still have to protect personal identifiable information,” Mayor Robby Adams said.

The council approved issuing the scholarship with a few revisions to the award’s policy page recommended by Debra Adams, such as updating possible school clubs, organizations or academic organizations applicants could belong to.

Scholarship recipients receive $500 per semester for their first year of enrollment in accredited colleges or vocational institutes.

A scholarship committee — composed of Robby and Debra Adams, and former city clerk Harold Jones — will review applications and make their recommendation to the council one week before the May 5 City Council meeting.

The scholarship winner will be publicly announced at the school’s May 31 Awards Day.

Laurel Hill School seniors may apply for the city’s $1,000 scholarship using the application available at Debra Adams’ classroom, room 8001. The application deadline is April 8.
