NCWIT, a non-profit community, works to increase involvement in computing and technology for women, in part because there’s reportedly “one woman to 16 men (working) in technology.”

The NCWIT Mid-Gulf Coast Affiliate Award for Aspirations in Computing ceremony was Feb. 20 at Shelby Hall on the University of South Alabama campus in Mobile, Ala.

The student winner was Madison Corbin (12th grade), and runner-ups were Alexis Caldwell (12th grade) and Lauren Bailey (11th grade).

The student winner received recognition at the award ceremony, an engraved trophy, scholarship and internship opportunities and many other prizes.

Student runner-ups received a printed certificate along with many other prizes.

The Educator award, given to technology teacher Shanna Suggs, recognized instructors who encourage girls to pursue their involvement in technology.

Suggs received an engraved trophy, $250 in cash, up to $750 toward professional development training for workshops and various other prizes.

"Aspirations Award recipients are chosen for their outstanding aptitude and interest in computing, proven leadership ability, academic performance, and plans for post‑secondary education," the organization's website states.

"Educator Award recipients form a national community of peers, share practices, and empower other educators to encourage the participation of girls in computing," the site states.

Judges selected CHS's award recipients after reading their biographies, as seen below:
