HAPPENING NOW: Former carnival worker locks himself in Dollar Tree restroom

Multiple city of Crestview and Okaloosa County emergency responders converge on the State Road 85 North Dollar Tree after a man barricaded himself in the store bathroom Wednesday morning.

CRESTVIEW — A former carnival worker has been arrested and charged with criminal mischief after locking himself in the Crestview Dollar Tree bathroom around 10:15 a.m. Wednesday.

Crestview Police and Fire Department units and Okaloosa County EMS responded to the State Road 85 North store. Dollar Tree employees and customers milled around outside as emergency responders tried to talk the man into coming out.

“Basically he barricaded himself in there because he thought people were chasing him,” police spokesman Cmdr. Andrew Schneider said. “We had to kick the door in to get him out.”

The suspect, who just quit his job, was transported to the Okaloosa County Jail, Schneider said, adding that the man also caused damage to the store.

“He kicked some holes in the wall,” Schneider said.
