Sheriff's Office investigating 'serious' email threat sent to Okaloosa Schools

CRESTVIEW — Authorities have contacted a person of interest in connection with sending a threatening email to the Okaloosa County School District, according to the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office.

Earlier, the school district received a "serious threat via email," Superintendent Mary Beth Jackson said in a news release. "We are working with multiple law enforcement agencies on the matter.  Due to the ongoing investigation, we cannot share further information.

Just one minute ago, the News Bulletin learned that "Investigators have made contact with a person of interest in connection with an email sent to several school personnel and media outlets threatening harm to Okaloosa school students," an Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office media release states. "That individual is currently being interviewed. Investigators worked through the night to try to track down the source of the menacing threat, assisted by the Escambia County Sheriff's Office.

"Deputies also conducted physical checks overnight at area schools as well. Along with our School Resource Officers, extra patrols are taking place at our schools today. The OCSO also coordinated with information with the Superintendent of Schools and School District to keep them abreast of developments."

Jackson said, "I want to emphasize, nothing is more important to me than the safety of your children.  Our nationally recognized Sheriff's Resource Officer program will increase security at all schools.

"I regret that we must share this information, but I want you to know we will continue the education of your child just like we do every day."
