On Monday, 390 class of 2020 members received an orientation to the next stage of their education beyond middle school, including its challenges and rewards.
By Tuesday they were in costumes and getting into the Bulldog spirit. By Wednesday, they were excited for next week’s start of classes.
Bulldog campers divided into groups of about 25, with each group named—and by Tuesday, costumed—as a new superhero, English teacher Erika Kennedy, one of the Bulldog Camp program organizers, said.
Amid a flurry of capes, shields, Spanish moss and hula skirts, the Moldy Oldies, Peace Patriots, Island Invaders and Jungle Justices, among others, explored co-curricular activities, rented lockers, picked up class schedules, found their classrooms, and most importantly, met other classmates.
Upperclass group leaders offered the sage advice of students who’d been in the freshmen’s position themselves, and will also provide the guidance of an experienced buddy throughout the year.
As “Doctor Dynomite” members Kayla Scott, Thalia Mendoza and Elder Medina, some dressed in medical scrubs, settled down for a quick hotdog lunch before a pep rally in the gym, they shared their expectations for life as high schoolers.
“Meeting new friends,” was Kayla’s hope, while Thalia is looking forward to “new classes like cosmetology.” Elder was just excited to be in high school.
“It’s going to be great,” he said.
