Okaloosa school district prepared for inclement weather

CRESTVIEW — With rainy weather expected in Northwest Florida on Aug. 10, the first day of school, the Okaloosa County School District is making preparations for it, according to a media release.

Superintendent of Schools Mary Beth Jackson stated, "Our transportation department will monitor bus routes in low lying areas prone to flooding. Bus drivers will use caution in inclement weather and routes may take longer than normal.

"Our Maintenance Department has been clearing all storm drains in parking lots and downspouts to ensure the free flow of storm water."

The OSCD requests that parents ensure the schools have their accurate phone numbers, as they will send out the following call out script to the numbers provided:

“Good evening, this is Mary Beth Jackson Superintendent of Schools. I want to personally welcome all of our students back to school and remind everyone to drive carefully as schools open Wednesday, August 10th. I have worked with district officials preparing for the first days of school.

"Currently, it appears that our first few days of school may be filled with rain. Buses should run as scheduled. We will be monitoring road conditions throughout this rain event.

"Principals have in place safety procedures that address inclement weather throughout the school day. These procedures include the unloading and loading of buses and private vehicles that transport students to and from school.

"I am asking that you exercise caution and patience while together we open our schools once again. If you will be transporting your student, please be aware of the unloading and loading procedures at your school.

"The first days of school are always exciting and eventful and I am looking forward to another very successful school year. Student safety is my top priority. Thank you.”
