Crestview chorus pancake breakfast previews Dec. 12 concert

CRESTVIEW — Sounds of Christmas rang through Crestview High School’s cafeteria Saturday morning as the school’s 120-voice chorus presented its annual pancake breakfast fundraiser with its accompanying mini-concert.

Between flapjacks, sausage, coffee and orange juice, more than 200 friends, family members and supporters of the award-winning chorus got an early sampling of some of the music they’ll hear at the group’s Dec. 13 Christmas concert.

Both the breakfast and the Dec. 13 Christmas concert’s $5 per person’s admission benefit the chorus’ travels to its Disney Candlelight Christmas performances in Orlando, as well as to regional and state choral competitions.

Saturday, the chorus’ five ensembles — the Men’s Chorus, Women’s Chorus, Chorale, and the Chanticleer and Destiny show choirs — performed three numbers each.

Included was the Women’s Chorus rendition of Richard and Robert Sherman’s “Feed the Birds (Tuppence a Bag)” from “Mary Poppins,” a selection that delighted the audience.

Christmas music included the Women’s Chorus performance of “Sleigh Ride,” and Chanticleer’s popular “Fruit Cake,” a witty song made more so by the ensemble’s deft animatronics-like choreography.

Destiny, one of the chorus’ two show choirs, modeled their colorful new floral-print dresses as they performed Paul McCartney’s “Wonderful Christmastime,” while the mixed Chorale’s rendition of “The Little Drummer Boy” added some solemnity to the concert and offered an opportunity to display the elite group’s vocal prowess.

Crestview High Choral Music Director Kevin Lusk said the breakfast affords his students a “dress rehearsal” opportunity to perform before a live — and appreciative — audience before appearing at Disney World and in the more formal Dec. 13 concert setting.
