NICEVILLE — Northwest Florida State College welding instructor Scottie Smith has won the American Welding Society’s Howard E. Adkins Memorial Instructor Membership Award.

The honor recognizes welding instructors for outstanding accomplishments, according to an NWFSC media release. The award presentation took place during the recent national FABTECH event showcasing innovations in the metal forming, fabricating, welding and finishing industries.

Chelsea Lewis, a program manager with AWS, stated in a letter to Smith that the award was "a well-deserved recognition of your contributions to the science and technology of welding."

The National Center for Construction Education and Research, the American Welding Society and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration also have recognized Smith with certifications.

Smith won the Howard E. Adkins Memorial Instructor District Award for District 9, which covers Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and the Florida Panhandle. Winning that award in October 2015 made him eligible for this honor.
