CRESTVIEW — Crestview Police Department investigators are looking into a shooting that occurred around 3:45 p.m. Wednesday on the 400 block of Triton Street, off Old Bethel Road.

A 54-year-old man said he had been cleaning his personal handgun when he “observed a malfunction with the spring, and attempted to clear it by pulling back on the slide,” the investigating officer reported.

“At this time the handgun fired a round that entered in his groin, through his leg, and exited his buttocks,” a CPD spokesman report stated.

The man secured the weapon in his gun safe then summoned his adult son, who lives with the victim, his wife and two juvenile daughters. The son drove his father to North Okaloosa Medical Center for treatment.

While the investigation is ongoing, officers do not believe the man purposefully shot himself; they consider the shooting accidental and unrelated to a second shooting that occurred about three hours later in the Fox Valley subdivision.
