SHALIMAR — The Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office has selected its 2016 Supervisor of the Year.

A 20-year law enforcement veteran, Cpl. John Jenks has spent most of that time in the patrol category, according to an OCSO media release.

"Corporal Jenks has a great reputation as a leader, mentor and a seasoned street cop. He demonstrates a total commitment to the safety of the public and the safety of his fellow officers," the release stated.

In August, Jenks responded to a "shots fired" call in progress. With his experience and instinct, he chose a tactical, quiet approach. As he neared the home, he could hear screams of fear echoing in the darkness. He was able to discern it was a victim, pleading for his life. Soon he saw the victim cowering on the front porch as the armed suspect stood over him. Jenks took a tactical position and verbally challenged the suspect.

Surprised, the suspect then threw the gun to the ground and fled into the home. Officers arrested the suspect, and the investigation revealed the suspect had threatened and beaten the victim and had fired five rounds as they struggled over the gun. Jenks may well have prevented a homicide that night.

“He is a gifted trainer and is constantly passing his knowledge along to the next generation of officers,” the release stated. “Many employees could give testimony on how Corp. Jenks has mentored them and developed them into productive, satisfied team members.”

In addition to his daily leadership tasks, Jenks responded to 1,471 calls for service in 2016.

"If you are looking for John Jenks, you will find him either handling a citizen complaint or backing up another deputy. He is keenly aware of the demands on his shift personnel and manages the activity in an incredibly efficient manner,” the release stated.
