CRESTVIEW—The Crestview Police Department sent its SWAT unit Thursday morning to 215 Cobb Ave. W., an abandoned building.

The presence was an “abundance of precaution," CPD spokesman Brian Hughes said.

The Crestview Fire Department served “its version of a warrant” in response to code and safety violations, Hughes said. Upon the CFD's arrival, a man allegedly refused entry and “offered some resistance," Hughes said.

The fire department contacted CPD to provide assistance with entering the building. The departments were able to enter the building without incident, according to Hughes.

A man claiming to be the building's owner spoke to the News Bulletin after the incident but refused to give his name. Since the building is no longer in use, the alleged owner said, he allows homeless people to stay at the location.

The CFD's court-ordered inspection was in response to faulty and loose wiring in the building, the man said.

Calls to CFD for more information were unanswered; a voicemail was unreturned.

Editor's Note: Story updated to note the warrant was for a warehouse near Thrifty Foods, not the grocery store.
