CRESTVIEW — The Crestview Police Department Friday afternoon confiscated more than 5 pounds of marijuana valued between $10,000 and $15,000, depending on its purity.
When K9 Officer Shane Kriser observed a driver — identified as Baker resident Chance Phillips, 32 — run a stop sign on Main Street and allegedly almost cause two accidents, he pulled the Toyota pick-up over near the railroad tracks.
Kriser’s partner, K9 Officer Cody, never even had the opportunity to put his sensitive sniffer to work, Ofc. Kriser said.
“The wind shifted while I was talking to the driver and I could smell it,” he said. “He had it in his tool chest.”
Investigator Len Steinmeier said based on the odor emitting from the five, gallon-sized, resealable bags as he witnessed Ofc. Kriser weigh the marijuana, he could tell from his training that it was probably a high-grade product.
The bags each weighed about 550 grams. Steinmeier said it was one of the largest marijuana seizures he's seen in his more than 10-year career at Crestview PD.
Phillips, who was remanded to the Okaloosa County Jail, faces charges including possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute.
