CRESTVIEW — Warnings to protect delicate plants from recent freezing weather may have struck home for an as-yet unidentified marijuana cultivator. The grower placed a pot sapling in a vacant unit at the Crape Myrtle Apartments on Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue.
What wasn’t anticipated was that a pest control service, employed by the complex management, would stop by on a scheduled maintenance call the morning of Jan. 3 and stumble upon the illegal weed.
"I’ll bet whoever stashed their pot in that apartment never expected it would be found like this!" Officer John Cook, the responding officer, said.
The property manager said the apartment’s previous tenant had been evicted and was last seen in the unit around Dec. 1.
"When the unit was vacated it was left unlocked," Cook’s incident report stated. "It is unknown who may have placed the potted pot plant in the vacant unit."
The plant has been removed from the apartment, uprooted and submitted into evidence for destruction, according to a Crestview Police Department news release.
