CRESTVIEW — These are the latest North Okaloosa crime briefs from area organizations.

Second arrest made after Crestview shooting

According to a Crestview Police Department media release, a second suspect has been arrested after a March 17 home invasion shooting on Virginia Street in Crestview. 

The shooting started when two individuals kicked in the door of a home on Virginia Street in the early morning and demanded money and marijuana. A 19-year-old woman celebrating her birthday at her mother’s house with a friend was shot in the thigh as she discharged a Taser-like weapon at the two intruders.

Jalen Zyquez Mount, 14, was arrested April 5 after being identified in a photo lineup by the victim’s friend, who saw the incident. He faces a felony charge of home invasion robbery.

The other alleged intruder, Tristen Stewart, 15, was arrested March 29.

Teens face escape charges

A 13-year-old and a 15-year-old are back in custody after escaping April 3 from the Okaloosa Youth Academy and heading into woods nearby.

The two left the Straight Line Road facility about 5 p.m. Staff members located the 15-year-old shortly afterward.

The 13-year-old evaded capture over several hours as two Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office K9 teams, several Department of Corrections tracking K9s, and a Crestview PD unit searched the heavily wooded area and creeks for him.

At approximately 10:30 p.m. a Department of Juvenile Justice employee stopped at a Crestview McDonald's and saw the 13-year-old there. She notified the OCSO and deupties took the teen into custody. The report stated, "In his possession were several items that appeared to have been purchased from Walmart including a backpack, new clothing, and bags of candy," and he also had a black laptop that he allegedly stole from an unknown vehicle, along with cash.

Additional charges may be pending for the 13-year-old.
