CRESTVIEW — The Silver Oaks subdivision of Crestview has a brand-new park in honor of a former state senator, Ferrin Campbell Sr.
The Okaloosa County Board of County Commissioners made a resolution naming the park in his honor April 14.
Campbell lived a life of service.
He flew fighter planes for the Marine Corps during the Second World War. During the war he earned a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart.
When he returned home, Campbell became the youngest-ever sheriff of Okaloosa County, earning the distinction at the age of 26.
After getting his law degree from the University of Florida, Campbell served as a senator for the area.
"He was a one-of-a-kind individual," Okaloosa BOCC Chairman Graham Fountain said.
"He served our county in so many ways and his service is a testament to his character."
Ferrin's grandson, Ferrin III, his wife and two sons attended the ceremony. They unveiled a plaque honoring their grandfather and great-grandfather and cut the ribbon in order to officially open the park, as members of the Silver Oaks community, who will use the park on a daily basis, looked on.
"Parks like these are essential to our community," Fountain said. "They are smaller, and used by local neighborhoods, which benefit us in several ways. They are easier to keep clean and safe, because the community around it takes ownership of the park and draws a source of pride from keeping it in good order."
