Crestview High artists shine

CRESTVIEW — Crestview High School students submitted approximately 300 projects in the school's May 17 art show.

Judges awarded first through third place, honorable mention across several categories, and 2D and 3D Best in Show winners.

The reception also included the first induction ceremony of CHS students who met the grade point average, activity participation and attendance requirements for the National Art Honor Society.

Crestview is a new chapter member, and the seniors inducted will wear the rainbow-colored cords they earned with their gowns during graduation.

Over 100  students presented works in scratchboard, pencil, charcoal, mixed media and other 2D categories.

Some students also completed advanced placement portfolios in 2D and 3D, according to Lori Phillips, CHS beginning art teacher.

Claire Mesta's detailed monochromatic tempera painting titled "Hotel Garni" secured the 2D Best in Show. The 3D Best in Show winner was Christina Ramos, who constructed a two-foot-tall coil pot with a center opening, and topped it with sunflowers.

"Students who develop creativity through the practice of visual arts will be stronger in math- and science-related subjects," Phillips said. "Art is self-expression, a way of communicating thoughts and opinions. Art can also develop self-esteem, which is so important during the high school years."
